Charlie

I would like you to meet Charlie, or Pookie or Charlie-Warlie as he is known around the house. (Pookie is Mark's name for him, Charlie-Warlie is what I call him.) Charlie is a border collie who is now about 9 weeks old. We got him a few weeks ago from a farm outside of town.
Let me just put on the record here that "Free to Good Home" is really never "free". Just so you know. We picked the little guy up, feeling like we had hit jackpot to find such a precious puppy for FREE! But then the very next morning we had to rush him to the vet. Total bill so far for our free puppy? Almost what we would have paid for an AKC registered pure bred pup. It's all right though, we wouldn't have it any other way. We really love Charlie and feel like he won the lottery the day we picked him out. You see, the poor little guy was under-nourished and sickly. For having long hair and looking like a chubby little furball, he was skin and bones under the coat. And then the reason for the emergency vet trip was that we discovered our little Pookie had Round Worms. If you've never seen them, you're missing out on a real treat. These particular dudes looked just like spaghetti noodles, and were about six inches long. Talk about enough to make you lose your breakfast. Charlie was so infested with them that he was expelling just worms -- there was nothing else in his stomach. At this point we understood why he was so skinny; and no longer felt quite so passionate about reporting the people we got him from for animal neglect.

Anyway, it’s been almost three weeks now since we first took him to the vet. He’s completed round 1 of the de-worming meds and will have them again as a precaution this coming week. He’s had his first set of puppy vaccinations, and he’s been on special puppy chow to boost his immune system, etc. He slept a TON that first week, but he’s really perked up and started to grow and put the weight on. It’s been so good to see him so much healthier.

Good health, however, equals more energy. And oh boy, does this guy have energy! Is it sick for us to secretly long for the days when he was so sickly that he slept them away? I find myself thinking not when I am woken up at 3:30am by a particularly playful pup who wants nothing more than to lunge repeatedly at my face and attack my nose. Ah, love.

Greetings to Charlie Barley (that's what I call one of Shishmaref's cutest kids with the same name as your puppy)!!!!

I personally am glad that he does not have any more worms in his tummy, even if his new mommy and daddy wish he slept more.

RAM always said that couples should have a dog before having a baby. Seems like you're getting a good dose of this "wake up in the middle of the night" thing. :)

"Hey Sully-Wully!"
"Hey Celia...Welia..."

I just couldn't resist ;)

Ah, the joys of parenthood...except your new one only wakes you up once a night? Nate was an every-three-hours baby, then he'd eat for almost an hour, then (if I was lucky and could go back to sleep) I'd get two hours of dozing until he was hungry again. But I had it easy. I guess most babies start off with every TWO hours! Though I must admit, the snorting sounds Nate would do was more of a joy to wake up to than sharp puppy teeth on my nose...

hello little one from Michigan. You look so cute yet so onry. Your aunt sally herds fish and your aunt bella herds people as they swim. What do you herd? Love to you and your mum and pop.

He is super cute! Congratulations! I am glad to hear that he is doing better. Our first baby was a furry puppy. If only human babies potty trained as quick as fur babies do.

HI Dorese,

It's nice to "meet" you. Thank you for the comment on my blog. You have a cute pup on your hands. Good luck with him, border collies are too smart and too rambunctious for their own good! It seems like our Marley is always in trouble. But lucky for her, she is also too cute to stay mad at.
